Looking for that feeling
I’m a person who often experiences depressive or at least semi-depressive episodes, Melancholy maybe? Anyway, I often feel down. This is one of the down sides to spending a lot of time in my head, at least in my experience.
Experiencing these are generally not fun, so after a while I started looking for ways to improve this.
The answer, at least a lot of the time, is music!
I tend to listen to music most of the time. But when I’m feeling down, listening, as in, really listening to music can snap me out of it pretty fast. As long as I choose the right genre.
I kind of have to feel out the episode to know what will help. Sometimes Hip Hop, sometimes Metal. Soul seems to often be doing the trick lately. Salsa can also be nice. My music taste is broad so the “cure” can be one of many.
But it changes. Sometimes putting on the wrong music can make the situation worse.
And some music is completely off limits now, after experiencing multiple weeks of an episode. Marilyn Manson is on that list for example, should have figured in hindsight.
I keep forgetting that music really helps for some reason. It’s happened countless times now where I’ll be down and it takes me a few days to remember to sit down and have a listening session.
I’m writing this in part to help me remember.
It’s not a magic cure, but for me, it sometimes is.
I recommend you go listen to some music.
